If you have ever read a phone launch article and seen a claim like "the highest camera score ever recorded", you have run into DXOMARK. It is the most quoted smartphone benchmark in the industry, it is also one of the most misread, and the single number in the headline is rarely the number that matters. This guide explains what DXOMARK actually measures, why the scores are not out of 100, and where every current flagship sits in the rankings right now - including how the phones we review here stack up.

What Is DXOMARK?
DXOMARK is an independent testing laboratory that scores the hardware quality of consumer devices - primarily smartphone cameras, displays, batteries and audio systems. It began in 2003 as the image quality assessment division of the French imaging company DxO Labs, launched the public dxomark.com scoreboard in 2008 for camera sensors, and was spun out as a separate, privately owned business in September 2017 under the name DXOMARK Image Labs.
The important thing to understand about DXOMARK is that it is a lab, not a review site. Every score comes from a fixed, repeatable protocol: thousands of measurements taken in controlled lighting rigs, plus a large set of perceptual comparisons made by trained testers on real-world shots. The same phone tested twice should produce the same score. That is the whole point, and it is what makes DXOMARK genuinely useful even when you disagree with its conclusions.
DXOMARK publishes the structure of each protocol and the formulas behind each score, which is unusual in this space. It also sells its Analyzer test equipment and consulting services to the same phone manufacturers whose devices it scores - a conflict worth knowing about, and one we come back to below.
Why DXOMARK Scores Are Not Out of 100
This is the single biggest source of confusion. A DXOMARK score of 168 is not "168 percent". The scale is open-ended: it has a floor near zero but no ceiling. It was anchored years ago against the devices available at the time, and as camera hardware improved, the top scores simply kept climbing past 100.
In the current camera database the scores span roughly 45 to 175 points. That spread is the useful information. What a score of 168 tells you is not "this phone is 68 percent better than perfect" - it tells you where this phone sits relative to every other phone in the same database, tested the same way.
Two practical rules follow from this. First, only compare scores within the same category: a Display score of 155 and a Camera score of 155 have nothing to do with each other. Second, small gaps are noise. A three-point difference between two phones is not something you will ever notice; a thirty-point difference absolutely is.
The Four Smartphone Protocols
DXOMARK does not produce one overall phone score. It runs separate, independent test protocols and publishes a separate ranking for each. A phone can top one list and be absent from the others entirely - only 260 of the 415 devices in the database have a camera score, and just 175 have been through display testing.

Each protocol breaks down into sub-scores, and those sub-scores are where the real buying information lives. A Battery score of 164, for example, can come from very different places: the Honor X9c earns it through enormous autonomy, while the Motorola Edge 60 Pro gets to the same number with much faster charging and less stamina. Same headline, opposite phones.
Camera: what the use-case scores mean
The current Camera protocol, version 6, was rolled out in 2025 after more than two years of consumer research. It replaced a sprawling list of attribute scores with a much cleaner structure: two sub-scores for Photo and Video, plus five use-case scores that map onto how people actually shoot.
- Outdoor - bright daylight, the easiest condition. Nearly every flagship scores high here, so it separates phones the least.
- Indoor - mixed and artificial light, where white balance and noise control start to matter.
- Low light - down to 0.1 lux. This is the most punishing test and the widest spread at the top of the table.
- Portrait - v6 added roughly 50 portrait scenarios across nine lighting types, covering skin tones, subject separation and bokeh realism.
- Zoom - the score that most often exposes the gap between a phone with a real telephoto lens and one leaning on cropping.
These use-case numbers are the reason to click through to a full DXOMARK report rather than stop at the headline. Two phones tied on 164 points can be built for completely different photographers - one strong on zoom, the other on portraits.
A warning about protocol versions
DXOMARK re-tests devices when it revises a protocol, but not all of them, and the rankings mix versions. Of the phones with camera scores today, 37 have been measured on the current v6 protocol and 223 still carry v5 numbers. In the current top 20 the first 18 entries are all v6, so the very top of the table is a fair fight - but once you scroll further down you are comparing across methodologies, and the older scores are not directly equivalent.

The headline story at the top is that Huawei still holds the crown with the Pura 80 Ultra on 175 points, and that the chasing pack is dominated by Chinese ultra-flagships from Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi - phones most Western buyers cannot easily get. The highest-ranked widely available phone is the Apple iPhone 17 Pro at number 6 on 168 points, and its scorecard is a textbook example of why sub-scores matter: it posts the best Outdoor score in the entire top 20 at 185 and the strongest Video sub-score of the group at 172, but its Zoom score of 135 is the weakest in the top ten.

Google sits just behind with the Pixel 10 Pro XL at number 14 on 163 points. Note that DXOMARK tested the XL specifically - the smaller Pixel 10 Pro has not been through the lab, though it shares the same camera hardware. The previous generation Pixel 9 Pro XL holds number 16 on 160, which tells you how incremental the last two Pixel camera generations have been.

The battery table is the most surprising list DXOMARK publishes, because it is almost entirely mid-range phones. Big flagships lose points for thin batteries and heavy chipsets; cheap Honor and Motorola handsets with huge cells and modest silicon dominate.

The best-performing phone in this table that we have reviewed is the OPPO Find X8 Pro at number 12 on 155 points, one of only three phones in the top dozen that launched above $1,000. It gets there by being unusually balanced: 171 for autonomy, 140 for charging and 140 for efficiency, with no single weak leg. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra takes second place on 160 points and shares the best Video sub-score in the top ten at 167 with the rest of the S25 family, which is what you would expect from the brightest HDR panels Samsung ships. Its weak spot is touch response at 143, where every Pixel in the table beats it comfortably. Audio is the most neglected protocol, and its ranking is frozen in the past - the top two spots still belong to gaming phones from 2022 with the kind of front-firing stereo speakers that modern slim flagships have stopped fitting, and most of the top ten launched before 2024.

Treat this list as a historical record rather than current buying advice. The highest-placed phone we review is the iPhone 15 Pro Max at number 13 on 143 points, and there simply is not much recent data behind it.

Two patterns jump out. The first is how thin the coverage is: several of the phones we rate most highly, including the OnePlus 15, the Xiaomi Poco F8 Pro and the whole Motorola Razr Ultra line, have no DXOMARK camera number at all. If you shop by DXOMARK alone, those phones are invisible to you.
The second is that DXOMARK and our own scoring disagree most on mid-range phones. The Galaxy A55 lands 175th of 260 in the camera table on 108 points, because the lab is comparing it to $1,500 ultra-flagships on absolute image quality. We rate it well, because we are asking what you get for around $450. Neither answer is wrong - they are answers to different questions. How to Read a DXOMARK Score Without Being Misled
DXOMARK is a good benchmark that gets used badly. These are the limits worth holding in mind:
- It is price-blind. Nothing in the score reflects what a phone costs. A $1,700 phone beating a $400 phone is not news.
- It measures hardware at one moment in time. Camera processing changes substantially over a phone's life through software updates; the score does not get revisited.
- Coverage is uneven. Only 260 of 415 devices have camera scores and 175 have display scores. Absence from a ranking says nothing about quality.
- The headline number hides the trade-offs. Two phones on the same score can be built for opposite users. Always open the sub-scores.
- The business model deserves scrutiny. DXOMARK sells test equipment and tuning consultancy to phone makers while also scoring their products publicly. It publishes its formulas, which helps, but the dual role is real and has drawn criticism for years.
- It says nothing about the things that break phones. Software support length, durability, repairability, thermal throttling under sustained load and update policy are all outside the protocols.
DXOMARK Scores vs Our MobileTracker Scores
We use a 0 to 10 scale and it is doing a different job. DXOMARK answers "how good is this hardware in absolute terms, measured in a lab". We answer "should you buy this phone at this price". That means our scores factor in value, software support, day-to-day usability and the things a controlled lab deliberately excludes - so a well-priced mid-ranger can score higher than a technically superior flagship on our site and lower on theirs.

DXOMARK FAQ
Is a higher DXOMARK score always better?
Within a single category, yes - but only when the gap is meaningful. Differences of a few points fall inside the range where no user would reliably tell the phones apart. Differences of twenty points or more are real.
What is a good DXOMARK camera score in 2026?
Anything above roughly 160 puts a phone in the current elite - that is the top 20 of 260 tested devices. Between 140 and 160 covers most recent flagships and strong upper-mid-range phones. Below 120 you are looking at budget hardware or older devices.
Why does my phone not have a DXOMARK score?
Because DXOMARK only tests a fraction of what launches. It has camera scores for 260 devices in total, and the selection skews toward flagships and toward brands that engage with the lab. Plenty of excellent phones have never been submitted.
Is DXOMARK paid by phone manufacturers?
DXOMARK sells testing equipment and image-quality consulting to manufacturers as a separate business from the public scoreboard, and it states that scores are produced independently and publishes the formulas behind them. It is a fair thing to be aware of, and a reason to read the sub-scores and the written report rather than trusting a single number.
Does DXOMARK test battery life realistically?
More realistically than most. The Battery protocol runs scripted usage patterns rather than a simple video loop, and splits the result into autonomy, charging speed and energy efficiency. It is the reason mid-range phones dominate that ranking - they genuinely last longer than flagships.
