According to a Bear Stearns research note, Motorola expects by year end to ship a GSM based Q smartphone equipped with UMTS 3G technology. At the Q's announcement Motorola made it clear that it planned on bringing the Q to multiple network technologies. Verizon Wireless currently has an exclusive on the device, but that period ends at the end of the year.
Moreover, thanks to economies of scale, the Q's pricepoint should take a dip during the same time frame. Ron Garriques, president of Motorola's handset division, says he expects the Q to drop to about $50 (from its current $199). Garriques noted that its aided by IP holdings and doesn't have to pay some of the licensing fees that its competitors do.
