Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has announced plans to put GSM technology into all future handsets. While the company uses 3G networks exclusively at home, building in GSM support will allow enhanced roaming support. Currently users are limited to roaming in other 3G network areas.
Currently, only five DoCoMo models are GSM-compatible. The company will make more new models in the future compatible with both W-CDMA and GSM, and make all new models compatible with both formats within two years.
