On the coat tails of yesterday's announcement of two new 3G phones’, the LG CU320 and the Samsung SGH-ZX10 handsets, today Cingular announced ‘Cingular Video’ on-demand streaming video service, with 19 channels of video, and four more channels coming soon. In addition, Cingular Video has inked an arrangement with HBO for exclusive content, and is available for "$4.99 per month for HBO Mobile and $2.99 per month for HBO Family Mobile".
According to Sam Hall, vice president, Mobile Browse and Developer Program, for Cingular Wireless, "Cingular Video offers the highest degree of personalization and the widest selection of desirable content in the U.S. market. The service is designed with today's mobile consumer in mind and users are never more than a few clicks from their favorite programs."
Cingular Video includes a wide selection of video, including exclusive content, such as Fox News clips, ESPN, FOX Sports, FUEL and SPEED. The service also includes local weather forecasts for 100 cities across the country, and according to Cingular, "three times more cities than any other service provider".
Cingular Video will be initially available in the following markets; Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tacoma and Washington, D.C. Cingular promises that "additional 3G markets will be rolled out throughout the year".
Cingular requires that users of Cingular Video have, "a $19.99 MEdia Net Unlimited data package". HBO Mobile, is available on a monthly subscription basis. Other content, such as video clips, are available on a pay-per-view basis for a 24-hour period of time, much like cable TV's in-demand movies.
Cingular also expects to add the Nokia 6282 and LG CU500 to its 3G product line later this spring to compliment it's 3G offerings.
