Mobile pundit Russell Beattie comments on the state of carrier launched phones in the US in time for this year's holiday season. He did the same last year and viewing the two is an interesting comparison.

Some of the differences between 2004 and 2005:

• Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel have 3G (EV-DO) handsets for sale
• Music didn't make a big push, despite analysts calling 2005 the year of the music phone
• There were 80 phones in 2004 compared to 102 phones in 2005
