ICANN, the non-profit group in charge of the domain system used on the internet, today approved the top level domain (TLD) .mobi. This will make it possible for people to register domain names that end in .mobi. While mobile devices can access the internet at large, the .mobi TLD will be reserved for content designed for mobile use. It was lobbied for by big players like Nokia, Microsoft, Samsung, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
The general public should be able to register .mobi domains in the second half of 2006. Current domain owners will be given an exclusive period to register their existing domains with the new suffix (such as nokia.mobi).
