Verizon Wireless to launch location based services
Verizon Wireless
plans to launch location based services (LBS) in the third quarter this year. During a talk at BREW 2005 in San Diego, a Verizon Wireless vice president noted that one of the first LBS applications would provide turn-by-turn driving directions. While the applications are being developed by eight partners, the first series will carry the Verizon brand name.
Because of federal E911 legislation, Verizon Wireless has been selling GPS equipped phones for quite some time. Other carriers, including Nextel and Sprint PCS have already launched LBS.
