Samsung Q1: 24.5M handsets sold
Apr 15 2005 - 01:12 AM ET | Samsung
Samsung's first quarter 2005 earnings came in below expectations thanks to falling LCD prices and lower prices for mobile phones.
Here are the key points for mobile phones in Samsung's Q1 2005 statement:
* 24.5 million mobile phone handsets shipped (21.1 million last quarter)
* 17% profit margin on mobile phones (up from 3% in Q4 04, but down from 26% in Q1 04). The increase came from lower marketing expenses.
* Samsung sees the global phone market growing 6 percent to 700 million handsets in 2005.
* Confirmation of the Q4
market share loss to Motorola. Samsung is now the third largest handset maker.
Samsung is the first major handset manufacturer to report Q1 earnings. Q1 typically has lower handset sales.
