Qualcomm today announced an ontime sample delivery of a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A chipset. The Mobile Station Modem (MSM) MSM6800 is the first chipset for mobile phones enabled for the second generation EV-DO technology. EV-DO Rev A supports downloads of up to 3.1 Mbps and uploads of up to 1.8 Mbps. Other features of Rev A include support for VoIP and multicast for deploying video to a high number of users simultaneously.
Since US carriers are just now starting EV-DO revision 0, don't expect this new technology to make it to market in the near future. Today's announcement means a small number of the chips will be given to phone makers for testing new handsets.
