The
Wall Street Journal is
reporting [paid subscription req.] that Nokia has killed its fuel cell battery project. Nokia will continue to watch fuel cell technology, but a few roadblocks have made it hard to accomplish with mobile phones, namely that methanol (what's used to power the cells) isn't allowed on planes without a special housing. Other companies, such as NTT DoCoMo are
continuing research.
Fuel cells in mobile phones will allow for longer battery life and radical design changes (because the fuel tank does not have to be in the shape of a battery).
