Nokia combats counterfeit batteries

In an effort to combat (now common) counterfeit batteries, Nokia has launched a new program that will allow consumers to accurately tell if a battery is made by Nokia. The security system consists of a hologram and a serial number hidden under a scratch off area:

The visual elements include the Nokia Connecting Hands symbol, Nokia Original Enhancements logo, and a series of dots around the Nokia Original Enhancements logo. Each element is visible depending on the viewing angle. In addition, users can verify, either online or via an SMS, the 20-digit authentication code hidden under the scratch-off area.

Sales of Nokia batteries bearing the hologram label have already begun, and they will enter markets gradually. Reports of mobile phones exploding are usually tracked to aftermarket batteries. Like all phone makers, Nokia urges phone owners to use only official replacement batteries.
