Verizon Wireless is busy promoting data and text based weather services to its subscribers in the path of Hurricane Ivan. Despite imminent destruction and loss of life, the company is not making these services available for free. bq. As demonstrated with Hurricanes Charley and Frances and now Hurricane Ivan, weather conditions can change rapidly, so it’s important to have the latest weather-related news and information. Pricing runs $4.99 a month for data access to get weather information, and $0.02 for each TXT message alert. The National Hurricane Center makes a mobile version of its site that is available for free: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.wml. T-Mobile USA made its HotSpot service available for free in all of Florida during both Hurricane Charlie and Hurricane Frances.
